Affies prides itself not only on academic performance, but also in its extra-curricular activities. Unfortunately, during Covid times, it was difficult to maintain and continue these activities. But the hiatus is over! Affies Culture is back and better than ever! This year Affies is bringing back some of the old favourites, like choir and drama, and throwing in some new activities into the mix as well. Hopefully, we can form some new traditions along the way as well. Affies is proud to announce that there are already five cultural activities running from this term.
Although Affies offers Creative Arts as a subject for Grade 8 and 9, we no longer have Art as a subject from Grade 10-12. Therefore, Affies has implemented art as an extra-curricular activity.
Miss Kleynhans has opened her classroom for anyone interested in doing art. Whether you can paint Mona Lisas or glorified stickmen, the art room is open to anyone and everyone. Learners are free to create their own artworks or join in the activity led by the teacher and strive for the chance to be featured on the Wall of Art.
The Art Squad also have the chance to participate in several other projects. For example, Valentine’s Day block painting, Valentine’s Ball decorations, as well as Art competitions.
If there is one thing that Affies is not short of, it is talent. Evidently shown in our choir groups. Over 70 learners showed up for choir auditions, which resulted in forming two choir groups. The first group is led by Miss Isabelle Cronjé, along with Mrs Minné van Niekerk and Mrs Riana Human as coaches.
Ranging from Grade 8 to matric, this group specializes in an acapella style through many various genres, music styles and eras. There are roughly 30 learners participating in this group at present.
The second group, which is led by Mr. Coltraine Motaung, is an all-girls group and focuses on different genres to accommodate all members. Here, learners have a chance to showcase their talent in a free and encouraging environment.
The Affies acting Group is a drama project that started in 2021 by popular demand. Learners wanted a space where they are free to explore their creativity and have a chance to perform on stage or even in front of cameras. We have so many young actors and actresses in Affies, and the Acting Group is a great way for them to let loose and hone their acting skills.
This year The Acting Group is working on a project called Affies Rock. This is a musical theatre style production, featuring rock music from the 80s. The Affies Rock paly will be directed by Mrs Heleen van Greunen and Miss Hesti-Mari Kleynhans.
The Uniting Christian Students' Association (UCSA/VCSV) is a voluntary, non-racial, multicultural, interdenominational Christian organization. As a Christian school, implementing the UCSA has been a long-standing tradition here at Affies. The UCSA is open to anyone who wants to join in on the activities. These activities include bible study during breaks, prayer circles, praise and worship, and so much more. Our very own Mr Martin Botha and Miss Erika Keulder have taken over the UCSA from Coach Gerhard Struwig after his departure from Affies.
A warm welcome to you both, and may you have the best of luck!
